When it comes to home storage, the more creative the solutions, the better; when we first moved into our apartment, it seemed like there was so much potential for maximizing the storage space. After all, what could be more ideal than a smaller home with an upstairs loft and an additional small room that is perfect for storing things? However, after moving boxes in and out multiple times and coming up with new solutions every time we had a new houseguest or needed to access something quickly, our home storage solution remains rather limited. We have managed to squeeze a lot of things into this tiny apartment (which is now mostly filled with Ikea furniture). We have also learned quite a few lessons about home storage along the way. Here are some ideas to help you maximize your own home storage space.

Make the Most of Your Windows

When it comes to home storage ideas, don’t overlook your windows. After all, windows are often a large part of your home’s design, so why not use them for storage? From the outside, you can add curtains or shutters to your windows, which provide a great surface for storing things. Meanwhile, from the inside, you can add shelves or hooks that you can easily remove when they are not in use. Although you can’t use this space for heavy items, as it will stress your window frames, it is a great way to add some much-needed storage to a room. If you have a large bay or picture window, you can use it for storage by adding a shelf below. You can then use the shelf to store items like books, baskets, and decorative items. Alternatively, you can use the shelf to display items you don’t need often.

Use foldable furniture

Foldable furniture is a great way to maximize home storage space without buying a new couch or bed. For example, if you have an open living space, you can use foldable chairs or ottomans to create more seating when you need. Meanwhile, in your bedroom, you can use a foldable bed or couch to extend the space of your room. Another great use for foldable furniture is outdoor storage. If you have a patio or outdoor area in which you can store things, you can use foldable chairs or tables to store your outdoor items.

Utilize your ceiling and rafters

Even if your building code doesn’t allow you to install shelves on your ceiling, you can utilize the space between your ceiling and the floor above you. You can place baskets or containers on this space, often referred to as the “dreaded” basement ceiling or attic rafters, to store items you don’t need to access regularly. Similarly, if you have an open attic in your home, you can store items up there, though you will likely need to use a stepladder to access them. If you have low ceilings, however, you may not be able to store things up there. Alternatively, you can add hooks to put things like towels or jackets on the ceiling, which is a great way to add extra storage without taking up floor space.

Install pull-out shelves

If you have a small kitchen, you can install pull-out shelves to help you maximize space. For example, you can install a shelf in your pantry that extends out to help you store large items, or you can install a pull-out shelf above your sink or above your refrigerator to store cleaning supplies or food items. Similarly, you can install a pull-out shelf in your bathroom to store towels or toiletries. Alternatively, if you have an open closet, you can install a pull-out shelf to store items like shoes or sports equipment.

Add cabinets in your garage

If you have an open garage, you can add cabinets to help maximize the space in your garage. This is especially useful if you have a lot of extra tools and sports equipment or a small car that could benefit from extra storage space. Alternatively, you can add storage to your garage by using the walls of your garage as extra shelving space. If you have low ceilings, however, you may be unable to add cabinets above your garage. Garage cabinets and storage prices are often quite low, so it is one of the best solutions for you.

Add a rotating storage rack

If you have a small apartment with very little space to store things, you can add a rotating storage rack to your apartment. This is a great way to maximize your kitchen space, and it is especially useful if you often cook and have a lot of kitchen supplies that need to be accessible. Alternatively, you can add a rotating storage rack to your bedroom to store clothes or other items that you don’t need every day. This is a great way to maximize the space in your bedroom and ensure you always have enough room to walk around.

Conclusion

Regarding home storage ideas, the more creative the solutions, the better. After all, what could be more ideal than a smaller home with an upstairs loft and an additional small room that is perfect for storing things? However, after moving boxes in and out multiple times and coming up with new solutions every time we had a new houseguest or needed to access something quickly, our home storage solution remains rather limited.
