Originally, Sam’s parents were from El Paso, Texas. He also has an ancestor who served as a surgeon at the Battle of San Jacinto.
When he was 13 years old, Sam moved from California to Portland, Oregon with his family.
Sam moved to Los Angeles in the late 1960s to pursue a career in acting. Sam’s father had discouraged him from doing this since he wanted him to get a college degree.
According to Sam, his father was a realist. He remembered his dad saying that Sam will only get a small chance of starting a career in Hollywood.
Sam also said that he thanked his dad every day for the work ethic that he had fashioned.
While studying acting, Elliott worked in construction. He also served in the 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard.

In 1984, Sam married Katharine Ross. Katharine is also an actress. In 1969, she starred in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid where he met Sam.
However, the two only started dating until 1978 when they both starred in The Legacy.
The couple has a daughter named Cleo Rose Elliott. She was born on September 17, 1984. Today, Cleo is a musician in Malibu, California.
Sam and Katharine live on a seaside ranch in Malibu. They bought this property in the 1970s. Aside from that, Sam also has a property in the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
In 2012, Sam’s mother died at the age of 96. After his mother’s death, he took ownership of his childhood home in northeast Portland.
